Ohio Landfill to Expand Around Mountain of Trash

Lynn Schenkman

Colerain Township, Ohio -- The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced it will allow the Rumpke Sanitary landfill to expand, adding 6.4 million cubic feet to a western slope of the property, according to news sources. The addition will not add height to what residents call Mount Rumpke, which stands at 1,000 feet and is the highest point in Hamilton County. The EPA prohibited the landfill from obtaining expansion permits for three years in 1996 when 30 acres of waste slid downhill, starting fires and exposing old garbage.
