NRC Wants Used Sneakers

In partnership with Beaverton, Ore.-based Nike, the National Recycling Council (NRC), Washington, D.C., has announced plans to help expand Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program to include 25 communities across the America. Nike and the NRC hope to collect more than 125,000 pairs of used athletic shoes with this expansion. Since November 2002, 19 recycling organizations have agreed to collect at least 5,000 shoes by June.

To expand the program, the NRC will educate a network of more than 20 state affiliates and more than 4,000 recycling organizations. Nike is responsible for collecting shoes from recycling centers. To recycle the shoes, Nike slices and grinds them for athletic courts, tracks, fields and playgrounds.
