New York – In the face of a budget crunch, New York's Mayor Bloomberg says his administration is poised to cut 103 landfill jobs in the New York area, including tractor operators, crane engineers, oilers and barge launch operators. The layoffs come on the tail of the World Trade Center work at the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island, which ended in July. Mayor Bloomberg told the
that the layoffs would be the city’s final option to bridge a $1 billion deficit this year and a $6 billion gap the following year. In total, the layoffs will save $6.5 million in salaries. The Department of Sanitation has notified labor unions.
