New York City to Close Fresh Kills Ahead of Schedule

New York — New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has announced that Staten Island's 50-year-old Fresh Kills landfill will close in a couple of weeks, well ahead of the Dec. 31 deadline. Although Giuliani refused to discuss the details of the city's waste export plan, a Sanitation Department spokeswoman said that a short-term plan is in place and that the city is working on a long-term plan involving rail transfer or barges.
