New Haven, Conn. -- Mayor John DeStefano has proposed a moratorium on building new or adding expansions to waste management facilities. The proposal would affect three facilities currently under construction that are intended to handle municipal solid waste, sanitary sludge and construction debris. DeStafano told news sources the reason for the moratorium is to prevent further health risks, which include rising asthma rates. Rep. Robert Megna, D-Conn., is calling for an investigation of the effects of waste-handling facilities on air quality. In lieu of more waste sites, the town has plans to develop its waterfront property with a park.
