Illinois Doubles Tipping Fees, Eliminates Tax Exemption

Naperville, Ill. -- Illinois residents and businesses will see higher garbage bills starting July 1. With the intent of balancing the state budget, Governor Blagojevich and the general assembly approved a measure to raise tipping fees from $1.07 per ton to $2.22 per ton. The state also will raise landfill permitting fees. Two other Illinois fee increases were enacted by the general assembly last month. State sales tax exemption on heavy machinery used at landfills and transfer stations was eliminated, which will result in tax increases of 5 to 8.75 percent on capital expenditures. Also, truck license fees will rise from $2,800 to $3,808 per vehicle.
