Cleaning Up NYC

New York -- The New York Sanitation Department has authorized $275,000 a week in overtime pay for sanitation workers to tidy the city’s overflowing trash bins. In May, thousands of sanitation workers lost their jobs and routes were reduced because of budget cuts, which has resulted in excess trash on city streets. Since then, parts of the sanitation department’s budget and routes have been restored, leaving workers scurrying to clean up. However, $275,000 is equal to the pay of 90 full-time workers.
