California e-Waste Bill Passes State Assembly

Sacramento, Calif. -- An e-waste bill that would require producer responsibility for the safe manufacturing and recycling of TVs and computers has passed the California State Assembly with a 42 to 29 vote. If the governor signs the bill into law, it will establish a $6 to $10 point-of-sale fee. Sen. Byron Sher, D-Calif., who sponsored the legislation, told sources the fee will not dissuade consumers from making new purchases because many manufacturers that provide a recycling services already charge $20 to $50 per unit
