On June 30, Robert P. Stearns retired as an employee of Long Beach, Calif.-based SCS Engineers (SCS). Stearns, who co-founded SCS in 1970, served for more than 30 years as the firm’s president and chairman. According to a SCS press release, Stearns will continue to work with the company as a consultant and will serve as chairman at least through 2008.
SCS credits Stearns with advances in the practices of solid waste management, contributions to the environmental engineering profession and leadership in building a notable environmental engineering practice. Under his leadership, SCS implemented an employee stock ownership plan in 1986, facilitating the growth of the firm from 150 employees to over 550 today.
