San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors voted 10-1 in favor of banning the city’s major grocery stores and pharmacies from using conventional plastic bags, reported by USA Today. Instead they must use biodegradable plastic bags or recyclable paper ones.

This makes San Francisco the first major city in the country to ban conventional plastic bags, which are made from petroleum.
