Silver Spring, Md. — The Solid Waste Association of North America, Silver Spring, Md., recently announced the winners of its 2004 Professional Achievement Awards. The awards were created more than a decade ago to honor individual achievement and commitment to the organization. The winners will be honored during the WASTECON 2004 conference in September in Phoenix. The awards and their recipients are listed below.
Professional Achievement Award — Public Member: John B. Abernethy, manager of solid waste operations, Sacramento County, Calif., Department of Public Works; Professional Achievement Award — Retired Member: Paul Smilanich, retired superintendent of solid waste collection, city of Sacramento, Calif., and Pete Chavez, retired solid waste management director, city of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Professional Achievement Award — Life Member: Jack Friedline, development services manager, city of Mesa, Ariz.; Robert L. Lawrence Distinguished Service Award: J. David Myers, general manager of Monterey Regional Waste Management District in Marina, Calif.; Life Member Award: Paul Stoller, vice president of Cambridge, Mass.-based Camp Dresser & McKee Inc.; and Honorary Member Award: William W. Hinkley, bureau chief of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Solid and Hazardous Waste.
