Jacoby Energy, Atlanta Gas Light (AGL), Houston-based Waste Management and Dekalb County, Ga., have reached an agreement to turn one of metro Atlanta’s largest landfills into an alternative energy source. The Live Oak Landfill, owned by Waste Management, will be used by Jacoby Energy to recover methane gas and pump it into AGL’s pipeline network for its customers.

“As governments, businesses and the public become increasingly concerned about the security of supply as well as the sustainability and environmental impact of energy sources, the demand for alternatives to fossil fuels including waste-based energy represents a major opportunity for private and public entities to work together to fulfill America’s renewable energy needs,” said Brad Gardner, vice president of the Atlanta market area for Waste management, in a press release.

Live Oak Landfill was closed in December 2004, but accepted more than 1.2 million tons of waste each year during its 19-year tenor.
