Senate Bills Threaten Indiana Recycling Programs

Two Indiana state senators have authored bills threatening the future of solid waste management districts, arguing their time has come and gone.

One of the bills could jeopardize the curbside recycling program in St. Joseph County, one of just 17 counties out of 92 in the state that has the service.

That bill, introduced by Sen. Liz Brown, R-Fort Wayne, would allow counties with their own districts, like St. Joseph, to dissolve them while retaining their funding sources and programs if county commissioners so choose. It also would allow smaller counties that belong to multi-county districts to withdraw from them.
