J.P. Mascaro Sues to Block Allentown Trash Contract

Montgomery County trash hauler J.P. Mascaro sued the city of Allentown and its trash collection company Waste Management of Pennsylvania on Thursday, seeking an injunction to block the award of the city's trash collection contract to Waste Management.

The trash contract was the subject of contentious hearings before Allentown City Council late last year before it was approved in December by a 6-1 vote, granting Waste Management five more years as the city's trash collector at $10 million a year.

The five-year deal with a series of four one-year extensions includes a provision that switches the city to single-stream recycling, meaning residents can put all their bottles, cans, paper and other recyclables into one bin for collection.
