Franklin County, Mo., Approves Coal Ash Landfill Zoning Amendments

Franklin County leaders have approved zoning code changes that may derail environmental lawsuits that seek to block a coal ash landfill proposed by Ameren Missouri.

Patricia Schuba, head of the Labadie Environmental Organization (LEO), said the Franklin County Commission approved the changes Tuesday morning.

“It was clear that the (Franklin County) attorney was suggesting these changes to stop litigation,” she said.

Ameren Missouri, too, has said the changes would “address some of the legal concerns that have been raised” from Schuba’s group, which is represented by an attorney and law students from the Washington University Interdisciplinary Environmental Clinic.
