PICKING UP NEW YORK CITY's trash may not be the most glamorous job, but Andrew Macchio makes the most of his day by singing. Residents on the city's Upper East Side are entertained by this worker's operatic voice resounding up and down East 65th Street. The 57-year-old Macchio, who has collected 13 tons of garbage every day for the past 23 years, uses singing as a way to get his mind off his daily work routine. Macchio's repertoire includes patriotic songs and classic hits such as Frank Sinatra's “My Way.” Residents have come to recognize his voice and wonder why he's hauling garbage and not singing professionally. But with retirement in the near future, his possibilities are endless.
