All the muscle in the world could not have knocked the money out of this machine.
Several men were spotted using a stolen garbage truck to try to steal an automatic teller machine (ATM) and its cash from a Honolulu mall. Police said the thieves rammed the ATM at least eight times in five minutes, knocking it off of its foundation but not breaking it loose from bolts in the floor.
According to the police, the men stole a garbage truck from Horizon Waste Services and modified it by cutting off the fingers typically used to lift dumpsters. Then they installed a makeshift plate and chain designed to scoop up the ATM.
“They used the front of the truck, they used the back of the truck, they used it any which way to [try to] get in,” said Honolulu Detective Letha DeCaires. “I think they thought it was going to be a little bit easier.”
