Students participating in the Maryland Department of the Environment's (MDE) Rethink Recycling Sculpture Contest stand next to their entry, a human-like sculpture. Participants were allowed to use recycled materials to create their entries. A total of 51 entries were submitted, and the materials used for the projects included electronics, plastic, cardboard, scrap wood, chicken wire and broken compact discs.

The winning sculpture was a guitar made from soda cans and wood flooring scraps, among other materials. MDE held the event in November to celebrate America Recycles Day.
