Barring a horrible break-up, most women would never throw a diamond in the trash. Yet that's what one woman did after receiving a $2,500, half-carat sparkler at a Manchester (N.H.) Monarchs' hockey game. As part of a Ladies' Night promotion, a jeweler gave the first 1,000 women through the gates an envelope, with 999 of them containing cubic zirconia.
Convinced she received one of the fakes, the winner didn't have the diamond appraised and left it on her counter until her roommate threw it away. Luckily, before trash-pick-up day came around, her son heard that the real gem hadn't yet been claimed and plucked it from the trash. Maybe next time the hockey team should stick to T-shirt give-aways.
