California Colleges Develop Waste Reduction Programs

WORLD WASTES STAFF

Sacramento, Calif. - Waste re-duction programs are making the grade at California colleges and universities.

With grants from the California In-tegrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB), three Cal-ifornia State U-niversities, Hum-boldt, San Marcos and San Francisco, have set up waste reduction programs to be used as models for the state's 136 public colleges and universities. According to the CIWMB, state colleges and universities generate the most waste among California public agencies.

The programs emphasize purchasing products made from recycled materials, communicating through electronic mail instead of paper and training students and community members on composting. Each university received $25,000.

"College campuses are valuable to MSW reduction efforts because of their ability to educate students about the need for responsible waste management," said Board Chairman Jesse R. Huff. The Humboldt and San Marcos campuses both saw an increase in recycling of more than 20 pounds per person in the 1993-94 school year, he said.

Homboldt's Program Director Mark Kennedy was pleased with the results. "We've successfully diverted over 45 percent of our waste from the landfill," he said.

The results of the programs were developed into a how-to guide and training video which is available for use on California's college campuses.
