Kansas Signs Slow Down to Get Around Legislation

Members from the Kansas Chapter of the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) joined Kansas Governor Jeff Coyler, M.D., for a ceremonial bill signing of Senate Bill 272. This legislation, commonly known as Slow Down to Get Around (SDTGA), is a priority for NWRA, which represents America’s private waste and recycling industry. The new law requires drivers to slow down and safely change lanes or be prepared to stop when approaching solid waste and recycling vehicles. Governor Coyler first signed the bill on May 8, and it will go into effect on July 1.

“Driving safely should be a top priority for anyone getting behind the wheel of a vehicle. We all want to safely get home to our families. This legislation carries an important message—take your time and slow down around trash and recycling trucks,” said Darrell Smith, president and CEO of NWRA, in a statement.

Safety is a top priority for NWRA member companies as well as their drivers and employees. Over the past four years, NWRA member companies and its chapters nationwide have successfully championed Slow Down to Get Around legislation, which is now the law in 19 states.

“On behalf of our Kansas Chapter members, we would like to thank Governor Coyler and Senator Mike Petersen for their support of this important safety legislation to remind motorists to slow down as they approach trash and recycling vehicles as they make frequent stops in the neighborhoods,” said Lisa Disbrow, vice-chair of the NWRA Kansas Chapter, in a statement. “Passing Slow Down to Get Around legislation has been a priority for our chapter, and we would like to thank Senator Petersen for sponsoring Senate Bill 272.”
