Waste Management Looking to Reduce Footprint at Gainesville, Ga., Landfill

Waste Management Inc. has applied for a permit to reduce the size of a landfill on Monroe Drive in Gainesville, Ga. The company will hold a hearing on March 20 to hear feedback from the public on the issue.

The permit is to reduce operations at the landfill by roughly 12.5 acres. The landfill currently occupies about 50 acres. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources requires public hearing for permits of this nature.

Gainesville Times has more information:

“Disposing the waste on one rather than two footprints reduces the environmental risk,” John Workman, a senior engineer with Waste Management, told The Times in an email. “Consolidating the waste onto one footprint also eliminates construction costs.”

If the permit is approved, no demolition or additional construction is required.

“Proposed grade changes are on the sides of the landfill and there will be no change to the peak elevation,” Workman said. “There will be no increase to the landfill capacity associated with this permit request.”
