South Carolina County Wants to Fine Trucks for Uncovered Loads

The Horry County (S.C.) Solid Waste Authority is contemplating a fine for trucks that don’t have required tarps on their trucks as they trek waste to the local landfill.

The Horry County (S.C.) Solid Waste Authority is contemplating a fine for trucks that don’t have required tarps on their trucks as they trek waste to the local landfill.

The fine would be $150 for big trucks and $75 for small trucks. It’s been discussed, but the county board needs to confirm its within their rights to levy the fees.

"We have adopted eight miles of Highway 90, from downtown Tilly Swamp to the railroad bridge," Knight said. "We pick it up a minimum of once a month, and in the summer we cut the grass."

Knight pointed out that Horry County litter patrols also help clean the section of the road from time to time.

"Two days later, and a certain area along there, you can't tell it's been picked up," Knight said.

Knight said he knows that much of the trash comes out of empty trucks leaving the landfill.

"You can follow them, and you can see [trash spinning] like a tornado in the back of the truck, and when it gets high enough it flies out," Knight said.
