Heading to New Orleans

Toronto-based Progressive Waste Solutions (formerly known as IESI-BFC Corp., see p. 6) has acquired Chalmette, La.-based SDT Waste and Debris Services. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

According to a press release, SDT will keep its name. Tom Martyn, a New Orleans-based district manager for IESI, which is Progressive’s U.S. subsidiary, will oversee SDT.

SDT’s contracts are not affected by the acquisition, according to Progressive. SDT collects municipal solid waste in the French Quarter and downtown sections of New Orleans; in the town of Independence; and in the parishes of East Feliciana, Iberia, St. Charles, St. Bernard and Tangipahoa.

In other transaction news, Milwaukee-based Veolia ES Solid Waste Inc. has purchased Panama City, Fla.-based Parker Sanitation, which provides residential and commercial waste services. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Veolia ES Solid Waste also recently bought three waste collection firms that it will “tuck into” its existing operations in Pennsylvania, Alabama and Illinois. Veolia did not release the financial details of those transactions, either.

Veolia purchased JC Sanitation in McClellandtown, Pa.; Treesmith Inc. in Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and Suburban Disposal and Recycling in Warrensburg, Ill. “These acquisitions align with our strategy of purchasing assets of smaller, independent waste companies in order to expand Veolia’s existing operations within these integrated markets,” said Jim Long, president and CEO of Veolia ES Solid Waste, in a press release.
