Chambersburg, Pa., Threatens to Sue Waste Management to Keep Glass Recycling

The city is threatening to sue its hauler Waste Management if it stops accepting glass bottles and jars for recycling in November.

Within the last year, cities and counties like Knoxville, Tenn.Kingsport, Tenn.Sioux City, Iowa, DeKalb County, Ga., and New Orleans  have stopped offering curbside collection for glass. And although Chambersburg, Pa., is next in line, it’s not something the city wants.

In fact, the city has gone as far as threatening to sue its hauler Waste Management if it stops accepting glass bottles and jars for recycling in November.

Public Opinion has more details:

Chambersburg Borough Council is threatening a lawsuit to protect curbside glass recycling for borough residents.

The borough operates a fleet of garbage trucks, but contracted with Waste Management in 2016 to pick up recyclables from the sanitation department's 8,600 customers. The contract specifies that Waste Management will collect glass for recycling.

Waste Management has announced to customers that, starting around Nov. 1, it will no longer accept glass bottles and jars for recycling.
