Recycling & Disposal Solutions to Resume Service in Portsmouth, Va.

Last month, Portsmouth, Va.’s contract with Recycling and Disposal Services ended, and the city opted to send glass, paper and plastic collected from residential recycling bins to Wheelabrator Technologies to be burned and transformed into steam energy for nearby Norfolk Naval Shipyard and electricity that’s sold onto the grid.

Now, the city is preparing to sign a new recycling contract this month that will allow Recycling & Disposal Solutions to resume service by December 22.

The city plans to sign a new recycling contract by the end of the month, ending a lapse in service that prompted officials to send recyclables to an incinerator.

At a City Council work session Tuesday night, City Manager Lydia Pettis Patton said she expects Recycling & Disposal Solutions of Virginia to resume service by Dec. 22.

Portsmouth has been collecting glass, paper and plastic from curbside bins and dumping the items at the Wheelabrator Technologies plant, where they and much of the city’s trash are burned into steam energy for nearby Norfolk Naval Shipyard and electricity that’s sold onto the grid.
