Comprehensive waste management systems develop, change and phase in over time. But what if an entire city or state could simply start over? What about an entire country? That is exactly what Qatar is going to do. Finalized in late 2017, the Zero Waste Qatar project, developed by Zero Waste Energy, is a recycling complex located on the outskirts of capital city Doha. The facility will process the country’s entire waste stream in one central location, including recyclables, mixed waste, organics, construction and demolition, and everything else. Technology includes advanced screen, air, optical, anaerobic digestion, composting and gasification technologies to produce commodities, including compost, and generate energy. Carbon credits will be made available to Qatar Airways and the World Cup.
