Republic Services Inc. has unveiled a new sustainability plan, emphasizing reduced emissions, renewable energy and new landfill technology, among other factors.

The Phoenix-based Republic issued its 2014 Sustainability Report, which introduces the company’s plan, Blue Planet. The company will focus on five pillars of sustainability: safety, operations, materials management, communities and people, according to a news release.

The waste and recycling company’s plan also emphasizes community engagement and employee growth opportunities.

Republic identified goals on three areas to reduce emissions: recycled commodities, renewable energy and fleet operations. By 2018 Republic plans to add at least 150,000 tons per year of recycling capacity; develop at least two landfill gas and renewable energy projects annually; and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Republic vehicles by 3 percent.

"In 2015, we will continue to explore new opportunities to drive efficiencies and create shared value among our customers, employees and communities."
