Tire Spire

Environmental tragedy or tourist attraction? Sometimes it’s a fine line. Case in point, a recently discovered mountain of 250,000 illegally discarded tires in Calhoun County, S.C., so big that it is visible from space. On one hand, you have a tragic backwoods dumping ground. On the other, an impressive hiking destination. It’s all in the marketing!

Sidestepping this conceptual brainteaser, responsible parties are instead cleaning up the 50-acre dumping ground, shipping the tires to Lee Tire Company, Inc., in Jacksonville, Fla., for recycling.

Presumably astronauts will now have to be content peering down at boring old landmarks like the Great Wall of China.
